The anesthesiologists at Memorial Hermann Surgical Hospital First Colony specialize in advanced approaches to reduce or prevent pain during and after your surgery.
There are four basic types of anesthesia:
- Local anesthesia – numbs a specific body area while you stay awake and alert.
- Conscious sedation – a combination of a sedative (to relax you) and an anesthetic (to block pain) administered before and during your procedure. You will probably stay awake but might not remember much from the procedure afterward.
- Regional anesthesia – blocks pain in a specific area of the body, as an epidural does during childbirth.
- General anesthesia – puts you to sleep. You will feel nothing and have no memory of the procedure afterward.
